What Techniques Are Used in a Sports Massage?
The Body Wellness Clinic | Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire
Sports massage uses a specific set of techniques designed to work more deeply into the muscle than a standard relaxation massage. Here’s what to expect on the table.
The Core Techniques
The techniques used in sports massage typically include deep tissue work, stretching, trigger point therapy, neuromuscular technique, muscle energy technique and soft tissue release, targeting the areas of the body that are overused or under strain.
Deep tissue work — firmer pressure applied to reach deeper muscle layers and release chronic tension
Stretching — assisted stretches to improve flexibility and range of motion around a joint or muscle group
Trigger point therapy — sustained, targeted pressure on specific tight spots or ‘knots’ to release them
Neuromuscular technique — precise, static pressure applied to specific points to release tension held in the muscle and surrounding nerves
Muscle energy technique — a gentle, active method using the client’s own muscle contractions against light resistance to release tightness and improve joint mobility
Soft tissue release — a combination of stretching and direct pressure applied to the muscle to break down tension and adhesions along its length
Why It’s Different
These techniques are more focused and technique-driven than a general relaxation massage, and they’re chosen specifically to reduce muscle tension, enhance recovery, prevent injury and improve performance, rather than deliver an even, full-body relaxation experience.
What to Expect
Your therapist will start with a consultation to understand your specific needs and areas of discomfort, then choose and combine techniques to suit — so no two sports massages look exactly the same. It’s a bespoke, targeted treatment rather than a one-size-fits-all routine.
